Buying Guide

When it comes to buying one of the coolest hammocks on the market, there are a number of factors you should consider. From weight rating to fabric, make sure to take all of these factors in to consideration.

Weight Rating

First and foremost, consider the weight rating. The weight rating is the most important factor when purchasing any kind of hammock.

You must consider whether or not the hammock you want to purchase will actually accommodate the weight of your friends and family who may use the hammock.

Steer clear from hammocks that don’t have a published weight rating, because those hammocks likely haven’t been tested to determine what the maximum weight they can hold is; this can be dangerous for you or your family and friends.

Freestanding or Not

If a hammock isn’t freestanding, you will have to do one of two things: attach it to trees that are appropriately spaced, or buy a separate stand, which can be expensive, or learn how to tie some serious knots.

Tying the wrong kind of knot can mean the difference between the hammock collapsing with you in it or not.

Too, hammocks that aren’t free standing will require the trees you tie them to, to be appropriately spaced. In other words, if you end up at a campground or space without trees that are close together, you may be completely out of luck trying to use your cool hammock.

Careful with Nylon

Many hammocks are made of nylon, particularly “military grade” or “parachute grade” nylon. While that can be a durable material, it can also be a material that makes you very, very sweaty in the hottest of conditions.

Nylon/polyester blends are best for cooler experiences if you are looking for a synthetic fabric. Natural fabrics will always keep you cooler than synthetic fabrics, however. Cotton, in particular, is highly breathable and won’t make you more hot or humid than it already is in the atmosphere.

Too, nylon can sometime emit smells or odors in extreme heat. And, if it gets wet, if it is not mold and mildew resistant or of quick drying nylon, it could promote the growth of mildew or mold.

Portability

How portable of a unit you are looking for should be another major consideration. Many of these units are portable, but they are not necessarily going to take up a small space when you transport them.

Some, while portable in theory, would take up as much room as a very large suitcase in your vehicle, while others can cram down in to a fairly tiny carrying bag that accompanys the product.

Warranty

A few products offer warranties, some do not. One thing you must consider is whether, given the replacement cost, a warranty should really sway your decision one way or the other. The more expensive the cool hammock, the more likely it should come with a warranty. Be careful buying expensive products without a warranty.

All-Weather

The importance of all-weather construction and materials should also be a concern for the information buyer. Remember that some products will be more durable than others, like synthetics. However, if you are looking for a hammock that you can hang and leave out for months at a time, you may have to carefully examine the type of materials used on every aspect of the hammock.

Even if you are not looking for a hammock you can leave out at all times, UV resistant material is important because your hammock will likely be exposed to a great deal of sunlight during the life of its use.

Easy to Flip

If you will have children using the hammock, be careful about hammocks that are easy to flip or turn over with a limited weight (such as a small child) in the hammock.

When hammocks have less weight in them, if they do not have multiple rope ends or a wooden bar tied to the ropes, they can more easily flip over. With a child in the hammock, that can be very dangerous if not deadly. A squirming child playing in a hammock that is tied to only two trees with single ropes and not multiple connectors could easily flip a child out if he or she becomes too active.

If you will have young children regularly using your hammock, you will want to look for sturdy construction that has multiple ropes attached to the hammock, and a wooden or metal bar securing the ropes nearest the hammock. While the hammock may still attach to a tree or stand with a single rope, it will be much more difficult for it to do a 360-degree flip with that type of construction.

Bringing it all together

There are a lot of very cool hammocks on the market today. However, just because the hammock is cool doesn’t mean it is the best deal for you.

Remember to carefully read this buying guide to determine exactly what will fit your needs the best. Carefully examine specifications like the weight limits, whether it is freestanding, and what it is made of to determine if it will work for your needs.
