Buying Guide for Concrete Garden Statues

There are a lot of different factors to consider when purchasing garden statues. Here are a few of the biggest features. If you aren’t fond of any of the options on our list, then make sure you ask yourself these questions and consider these details when choosing your own perfect statue for your beautiful lawn!

Environmental Factors

Choosing statue materials will largely depend on your environmental factors. If your statue will be in direct sunlight, it will require more resistant materials than a statue that will get placed in the shade of trees or among flowers.

Do you live near an ocean? Is this garden statue to decorate your beach house? Salty air can be pretty corrosive, and it takes a much hardier material to survive in this environment than suburban areas in different regions of the country.

If you live in a very rainy climate, like the Pacific Northwest, then you will need to make sure that your statue can handle getting wet on a regular basis. A lot of materials will rust and corrode in the rain, and you need something that won’t lose its paint, shine, or brilliance and start to mildew.

Humid areas also need to be aware of this. While it may not rain a lot in a humid area, the humidity can actually expose your statue to more moisture than rainfall if it’s high enough for long enough periods of time. In fact, it can be one of the biggest enemies to counteract since humidity often occurs in extremely sunny climates, where you need to find material that can handle both the moisture and the sunshine.

The same thing can be said for freezing winter climates. If your environment gets extremely cold in the winter, you need a material that can handle freezing over and thawing back out without warping, cracking, breaking or any other problems that can occur with this process.

If you’re in the city you also need to think about pollution. High volumes of pollution can cause your statue to get dirty and need regular cleaning. It can also corrode I, degrade the quality, and cause it to collect dirt. Likewise, areas that see heavy amounts of pollen also need to be aware of how the yellow layer of pollen will affect their statue.

Style

While style comes down to a matter of personal taste, there are some things to consider. If matching is important to you, then you will want to pick a statue that matches your landscaping.

Formal gardens do really well with replicas of Greek, Roman, and Italian statues. These can be human height, taller, or shorter. Replicas of old artwork and busts of ancient politicians work well here.

Natural gardens aren’t as restrictive as formal gardens. These tend to be lusher and include more wildflowers. You can pick pretty much any type of statue that you like for these gardens, and just decide where to place them. Usually, there will be some natural places to stick a statue that you will notice as you walk through your garden.

A lot of people use larger statues to create focal points in prominent areas of their gardens. These may include pools and unusual plants. Smaller statues can be set into flower beds and little niches to create a reason for visitors to notice those spaces and walk deeper into the garden.

Materials

Resin statues tend to be very light and much more affordable than other materials. They can still be incredibly detailed and very vibrant. Unfortunately, they also don’t hold up as well outdoors than their more expensive counterparts. Take care of these pieces, and don’t let them see too much exposure to the sun. These statues will crack if they are left in too much sunlight or freezing temperatures.

Concrete statues are the best choice. These are very common for outdoor statues because they don’t require nearly as much maintenance. If your concrete statue is painted, you will need to regularly apply a concrete sealant to make sure the details remain vivid and able to withstand the elements. Stone statues are extremely durable against nearly any weather type.
